Hardwood windows don’t take a lot of looking after, simply keep them Ill protected with a good quality stain and they should be fine for a very very long time.
I was asked to restore some hardwood windows that Ire in need of a little TLC, being 30+ years plus old they need a little more than a quick coat of wood preservative, but not much more.
As you can see from the photographs the wood had been treated over the years with a variety of wood preservatives. The windows Ire solid and in good condition but they lacked that beautiful hardwood lustre that makes them such a great addition to any home.
I decided not to use any strong stripper on these windows simply gave them a good hard sanding back to expose the grain. Some areas needed attention such as places where the beading nails had rusted, this was easily remedied with a high quality hardwood filler.
The photograph shows the process from before during and after. The results are stunning, the Standish, Wigan customer was so amazed at the transformation she asked me to also restore the hardwood door also very soon.
Almost all hardwood timber is sustainably sourced these days making it a better eco friendly choice for doors and windows and can last well over 100 years if not more. The UPVC alternative can easily start to fail after only 20-40 years – so if you have wooden windows and doors cherish them, looked after they will last a very long time.
