When you have a terraced garden sometimes you simply need a fresh start. This terraced garden in Appley Bridge, Wigan is a rental property and the new tenants wanted a fresh start when moved in.
So off I went, gardening tools in hand, Wigan Handyman on a mission once again.
Early January is obviously a time when the weather is against us all and gardening is tougher than usual, all the same getting ready for spring is essential, this garden clearance was a straight forward case of cutting back and exposing the bare earth ready for thorough cultivating when the soil drains and is lighter to work.
A few hours later the jungle is gone and already for a light hoe when the solid dries out. It’s important to note, when the weather is severe especially with the type of rain we have had recently, working clay soils in a garden is not only back breaking but not the best solution for good growth in the spring. Working clay soils when wet can lead to soil loosing structure, and become puddled and compacted. For more information on clay soils visit the RHS website.
